Great writing on a great topic

This book was written by an old-fashioned historian, the type whose focus is having his readers understand and enjoy the topic, not the current trend at too much and too obscure in a self-congratulating manner. Very interesting, and you learn a lot of history too because, like our well-rounded historian of this book, the bridge builders of yesteryear were also creators and developers in many areas. Most interesting to me were the suspension bridges and how builders finally came to understand the collective torsion these bridges were required to withstand -- imagine building a bridge across Niagara Falls capable of sustaining a railroad train, but they did it and the bridge engineer rode the first train across -- and secondly the bridgebuilder/ironsmith James Eads who designed the famous Eads Bridge across the Mississippi River at St. Louis, the longest arch bridge in the world at the time and the first to use steel. Eads also designed and built the ironclads that General Grant used in taking Forts Henry and Donelson and opening up the Mississippi to the Federals; his ironclads saw action before the Monitor-Merrimac affair. Eads designed, paid for, and delivered them in seven months (mostly his own money); no wonder people trusted him to build the great bridge ten years after the Civil War. The bridges in New York City will draw the attention of readers who know and love the Big Apple. Of course the book discusses bridges built by the Romans and throughout the centuries. A book this good is never out of date.

A "must have" book for any art lover!

This is a book you do not want to finish, you constantly wish that as you progress in your reading as the book will unfold in more pages. It does not happen. What a life story, full of art and style. What a charming book, simple and direct. Easy to read but so full of references to the Art of this Century. Peggy lived and tell the life of a brilliant collector not only of art pieces but of emotions and feelings. To me this is one of the best books of the year. It goes on top of DV by Diana Vreeland on my nightstand.

Confessions, Sort Of

Peggy was a trip. She also apparently had no editor, or so it seems, which adds to the air of entitlement and oblique charm that permeates this book. Her accounts are interesting historically, though PG's slant on history is sometimes its own beast. This is a quick read and some of her observations will make you laugh out loud ("I was worried about my virginity--I was twenty-three and I found it burdensome..."), while others are chilling, especially the question of which Jews she deemed worthy of her efforts to help them get to the States. This may be more entertaining than informative, but it's both.

Shortened and censored book of the true autobiography of Peggy Guggenheim titled "Out of this Century : Confessions of an Art Addict" at the moment - 30 august 2013 - not available to Kindle readers.
The very similar title is misleading and I suggest not to read it.
While the full autobiography "Out of this Century: Confessions of an Art Addict" is really enjoyable, full of wit and very open about her private life so strongly interwoven with her activity of collector, this shortened version looks like a flat puritan resum�.

A CLEAR, WELL-STRUCTURED INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN 2015 IN 132 PAGES

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

As the author, Professor Jan Klabbers says in his Preface, this book “necessarily paints with broad strokes” which is to be expected for a work which is both ‘advanced’ and ‘an introduction’ to global executive power organizations.

Klabbers rules the book out for the undergraduate as “it is not very suitable as a university level textbook on international institutional law”!

However, fear not- for Klabbers then explains the book’s use for the informed citizens assisting with help in formulating some reasoned opinions on, say, the United Nations’ latest enterprise, or how to assess the activities of the World Trade Organization, or the most recent policing engagement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (possible compulsory reading for Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn in late 2015).

It is right to say that this is another excellent example of the works published by Edward Elgar Publishing for their ‘Advanced Introductions’ series of titles which are both stimulating and thoughtful introductions to major fields in the social sciences, politics and law, and expertly written by the world's leading scholars.

This highly readable introduction from Klabbers gives what the publisher describes as “a nuanced overview of the legal mechanisms behind the operation of international organizations such as the UN, the EU and the World Bank.” He does just that!

Of particular assistance are the perceptive insights given by placing the law of international organizations in a political context. At the same time, the author presents a short but systematic discussion of a variety of relevant legal notions, ranging from the powers of international organizations to mechanisms of accountability.

Jan Klabbers is a leading authority on the subject and provides a concise and accessible examination of this developing facet of international law. We feel the book is of great benefit to both lawyers and political scientists for it is well-written and sets out clearly organized arguments. It is also very up-to-date with the latest developments taking place internationally.

The author focuses on the bigger picture, rather than any one detail and discusses law in a global (political) context. The aim throughout is to give a short but complete understanding of how the law works and why it works in a particular way.

And to that end, and to acquire some understanding of global governance (and how to keep it under control), Klabbers has provided here a basic blueprint of how such “entities” (the current favourite word of the decade) operate, whether there are limits to what they can do legally, and how they can be controlled (if at all!)

This is definitely a book for the modern international politics watcher, social scientist, and the international lawyer who has probably been most frustrated in the past that so little has been researched and developed in this area- it has now and Jan Klabbers is to be congratulated on a book of great worth in the developing area of international institutional law. About the Author

Eric Jensen is a former teacher and current member of the Society for Neuroscience and New York Academy of Sciences. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through university level and is currently completing his PhD in human development. In 1981, Jensen cofounded SuperCamp, the nation’s first and largest brain-compatible learning program, now with over 50,000 graduates. A Teacher's Toolbox

Eric Jenson's book outlines numerous practical techniques/activities that teacher's may use to produce deeper engagement into learning in the classroom. Based on working with student states, the book is segmented according to the different states a teacher would want to achieve/modify in the classroom, depending on the type of learning/evaluation being pursued. This material is a great extension to Jensen's "Teaching With The Brain In Mind" book and workshop. This is a must for any classroom teacher!

The only drawback: the spine of the book is flimsy, and the pages fall out very easily. This also may be from the fact that I have thoroughly used the book as a resource and have worn it out.

Great resource for teachers!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Tools for Engagement". This book is easily organized by states that a teacher would like his/her students to be in throughout the day. For each state it explains what the state is, why it is important, how long it lasts, what brain activity is involved, body language associated with the state, what foods affect it, what music affects or contributes to the state, and strategies.

One strategy he really pushes is the use of music. He believes music easily enhances the mood. He comments that if a teacher can not fit music into the day, that the teacher is talking too much. Music can be used as an introduction to a topic, to contribute to concentration or creativity, or as a cue to end an activity. The end of the book has a whole list of music that can be used in the classroom.

The author Eric Jensen believes that physical and social activities in class are good. Many strategies are variations of tag, partner and group interaction, stretching, clapping, and more.

As a busy teacher I really appreciated the easy and practical strategies for triggering the different states in the classroom.

Great book for teaching tools

If you are looking at Eric Jensen's books, get this one. I've read a few of his other books and most of his work seems to be summed up in this one book. If your a teacher/presenter and you want to keep you learners engaged and not do the same old same old that students are used to, this is a great book.

A must have for people who do not want to spend $800 for the SHRM material

I didn't want to spend the $800 for the SHRM online material, so a friend recommended this book and I'm glad I took his advice. I used this book exclusively for studying for my SPHR exam and passed on the first try! Like some of the other reviewers said, it's a little wordy and can be confusing because information is repeated throughout the book, but if you're able to get past that and focus on the pertinent iformation, this is a great study guide because not only does it provide all the information that's in the SHRM material, but it goes further by providinig background information and "real life" stories and case studies to help with your comprehension of the material. The online tests and flash cards are also great tools.

The only negative that I have with the book is that it doesn't prepare you for the "type" of questions on the exam which are scenario based and highly subjective. To prepare for these typ of questions, I would recommend getting a study guide that has "test prep" questions with an explanation of the answers. I got one for $9.99 on Amazon, and it did an amazing job with preparing me with how to answer these type of questions.

Review of PHR/SPHR Study Guide

I come from a resourcing and recruitment background and decided to study for the PHR exam as a means to broaden my knowledge and add a qualification to my resume. I bought this book after great reviews by other users thinking that it could be used as the main basis upon which to study for the PHR exam. I read the book from cover to cover twice, condensed and summarized, took the chapter review tests and all the PHR online test practices that came with the accompanying DVD in which I was scoring full marks by the time it came for me to take the exam. I failed the exam yesterday and whilst I don't hold this book accountable for my performance, I would say to those who are using it without broad practical HR working experience and/or without the help of other study techniques, that you may find that it isn't enough. Most of the questions in my PHR exam were dissimilar to those in the book - sometimes using terminology I was unfamiliar with, and were often ambiguous where it was difficult to choose a 'best' answer because in the real world it would have depended so much on the situation. Some of the questions drilled down into detail that isn't covered in the book. I left the exam yesterday feeling disappointed and whilst as I say, I don't 'blame' the result on this book, I would like to warn students who do not have a breadth of personal HR experience not to pin all your studying on this one book.

Great Study Book - Only reason I passed

I bought this book because I didn't want to purchase the SHRM $800 plus study guide. I made notes from each chapter took all of the exams and read all of the answers in the appendix. The one thing I appreciate the most about this book was the answer keys. Each question not only gave you the answer but the reason why it was right and gave the definition or reason why the other answers were not correct. I really believed this helped me pass my exam because I was not only able to practice sample questions but also able to study the other terms in the same sitting.

The book is a bit wordy but I really liked the real life scenarios it had through out the chapters and if you are already working in HR (as you should) you can make your own real life connections to the text. What I did not like was the fact that the book repeated information through out the book. It would start talking about a topic and go more in depth in the following chapters.

My study method was to take notes from each chapter (read approx 10 pages a day M-F) then the last month prior to my exam I studied my notes chapter at a time M-W. Nine days before the exam I studied a chapter a day and ended each day with taking the chapter exam. I took the exam once checked my answers, then studied the answer key and retook the exam about 30-60 mins later. The next day I would take the exam again and study the next chapter, take that chapter's exam, study the answer key and retake the exam 30-60 mins later. The cycle repeated until I was done with chapters 2-8. On the day before the exam I retook every chapter exam; studied my notes from the first section of the book (essentially I had transcribed the answer key from the pre-test) and took the exam then I checked the answers and then retook the exam 30-60 mins later. I did not do too well on any of my first attempts and thought for sure I was going to fail my exam.

I am proud to say that I sat for my exam today and I passed. In order to pass you need an understanding of HR. Simply studying terms and court cases will not do it. This book will give you that and if you can embrace the knowledge and not simply learn for the sake of learning and passing the test this book should be all you need. I was unable to utilize any of the online tools this book offers because my computer is bobo and I was able to pass using only this book and the practice test it contains.

SOG was the Studies and Observations Group, a U.S. Army organization that operated behind enemy lines in the Vietnam War. It gathered intelligence and was responsible for rescuing downed pilots, identifying bombing targets, kidnapping enemy officers, wiretapping phone lines, ambushing convoys, and mining the Ho Chi Minh trail. Plaster shares details of his training in Fort Bragg as a Green Beret before being sent to Vietnam, where he served three one-year tours in SOG. He chronicles the group's operations and portrays the soldiers he worked with there. Some readers may find too much here about fighting a war that many people today believe should have never happened, but the book nonetheless is an intriguing first-person account of this elite group's intrepid operations. Magnificent

I bought this book reluctantly because I'd already read Major Plaster's outstanding history, "SOG". That book is so good, so thorough, I thought, "What else is there to know"? I was wrong. In many ways, "Secret Comammandos" is a far better book. I think it's because "Secret Commandos" is Major Plaster's memoir--his own story of serving in SOG. "Secret Commandos" brings the accomplishments and bravery of the SOG recon men to life even more than "SOG". I found this book to be much more personal. Major Plaster does a wonderful job of conveying his fellow warriors as brave, funny, ironic, and yes, a little earthy sometimes. When too many of them fail to return from a mission, I felt the loss. After reading "SOG", I was deeply impressed by the caliber of men who fought without publicity in the Viet-Nam War. After reading "Secret Commandos", I'm grateful this country produced and, I think, still produces, tough and patriotic men who will defend this country to the bitter end. This is one of the best military histories in print. I also can't resist saying this. I tried to read "Jarhead" and couldn't get past Chapter 1. Yet that book has some very high ratings and is being made into a movie. Why? Real heros are like Major Plaster and his fellow SOG warriors. They do hard things and neither brag nor whine about them publicly. A final point. There is one very negative review for this book by someone who didn't sign their name. I can't help wondering if it's the individual Major Plaster writes about, who failed repeatedly--and at a very critical moment--to measure up to the standards set by the US military, let alone Special Forces. Thank-you for writing this book, Major Plaster. This country too quickly and too often forgets it's heros.

The Truth of War

Major John Plaster ranks as one of the top historians of the Vietnam War and stands alone among writers about special operations in Indochina. In Secret Commandos, Plaster continues the story he first brought to readers in SOG: The Secret Wars of Americas Commandos in Vietnam. Unlike all of the phoney wannabes that inhabit the fringe world of post-Vietnam America John Plaster is one who has been there, done that and has the T-shirt! You will sweat with him running recon along the Ho Chi Minh trail, shiver in the chill Central Highland nights while the enemy searches for him in the darkness, bleed with his comrades as they fight and die in places that are as remote for most Americans as the far side of the moon. But in Secret Commandos you will be on top of the action in a manner that can be written only by one with the experience who combines that background with an extraordinary writing talent.
Secret Commandos is a must-read for anyone who is interested in America's secret operations in Vietnam, in what the US Special Forces soldier is really made of, and in learning the hard-core truth. The soldiers who volunteered for SOG were a special breed no doubt. A "Covey" FAC pilot who flew with John.

John Plaster and I flew dozens of missions together over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He is the real deal. This, of all his great books, let me know as a FAC pilot what REALLY was going on, on the ground. I am humbled to have flown with John and ALL the green berets of SOG who demonstrated such awesome courage. No purple hearts were won there for minor scratches. Each page is riviting and puts the reading in the jungle surrounded by hundreds of NVA bent on taking out the teams. John's tribute to the Covey FACs (part III) was particularly moving. Hand Salute to you "Plasticman."
