Nowadays, it seems to only mean "more than ten years old"; quality doesn't come into the equation at all. Take, for example, the cable channel American Movie Classics, which typically features movies that are forgettable regardless of age. I prefer the classic definition of "classic", one that means something that is not only really good but withstands the test of time.<br /><br />Put another way, look at the Da Vinci Code. A decent book and a phenomenal best-seller, but will people still be reading it decades from now? Only time will tell. Time, however, has already told on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and it is clearly, by any use of the word, a classic. Although forty-seven years old, it is still as good as ever.<br /><br />Set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird tells the tale of the Finch family: widower father Atticus, young son Jem and younger daughter (and narrator) Scout. Atticus, an attorney, has been appointed to represent Tom Robinson, accused of raping a 19-year-old girl named Mayall Ewell. Since Tom is black and Mayall is white, guilt is assumed by most of the town and the trial a mere formality. The truth plays little part.<br /><br />Maycomb is a stratified society. There are the "respectable" people, who - with or without money - are considered the aristocrats of the community. The Finches fit into this category. There are the poorer white people, from the poor-yet-proud Cunninghams to the "trashy" Ewells. At the bottom are the blacks. Though Atticus refuses to participate in this classism (and tries to lead his children to do the same), he is pragmatic enough to acknowledge its existence.<br /><br />This novel may have the trial of Tom Robinson as its centerpiece, but there is plenty more going on as we take a tour of an impoverished town in the Deep South. With this book, Lee has written one of the Great American Novels. And while some great authors are not easily readable (for example, Faulkner), Harper Lee holds the reader from the beginning to end.<br /><br />Has there been any author who has written something so great in his or her only effort? Yes, there are authors like Margaret Mitchell who wrote Gone With the Wind (which has a far more romantic version of the Old South), but her career was cut short by an early death; Lee is still around and still has no other books published. It would be four more years before I myself went away to school, though I knew the story nearly by heart by then.<br /><br />I reread Mockingbird every year at Eastertime, though I am not particularly religious, nor do I mark this time in any other particularly hopeful way. Many true bibliophiles I know still talk about this book and the way it changed them forever.<br /><br />It deserves better than to be assigned reading to captive 6th and 10th graders. They read it then because they have to, not because some kind librarian or insightful teacher, or intuitive parent, sends it their way, like a lucky charm.<br /><br />I am not a Southerner and unless you can call a Western New York born mother and an Owensboro, Kentucky bred father any sort of meaningful Southern influence in my life, I do not know why this story fits my life so well. It filled a need I never even knew was there until I closed its covers on first reading it.<br /><br />I am a fan of both the writing and its message, its dual edged sword of hope and sorrow, the tragicomic aspect of its mood and setting.<br /><br />I wanted to be Scout as a tomboy girl and when grown, to be Atticus; my cats have borne those monikers well.<br /><br />I only wish my husband had not told me I could not name my own son after my hero.<br /><br />A rare case where the movie and its inspiration are as beloved as its author, To Kill a Mockingbird, N words and all, needs to be read more---and not just as some lame excuse for a paper writing exercise. Scout, Jem and Dill come alive in these pages. They have meaning in their world and in this one.<br /><br />The dialogue, minus a few colloquiallisms, is readable and real. You will laugh out loud at times when Scout makes her mind known to you.<br /><br />You'll wish Atticus was a real man. Maybe you'll even feel a little guilty about wanting him to replace your father in real life.<br /><br />And Tom Robinson? He'll break your heart. The standard biochem textbooks fail, in my perspective, because they focus on biochemistry as it relates to humans with some plant biochemistry if you're lucky. This text is comprehensive at its look at biochemistry of all life forms no matter how seemingly insignificant, including information on esoteric biochemical cycles and enzymes special to a few species of bacteria you will never hear of again. The author does this to draw a big picture of biochemistry as a chemical link between all life from an evolutionary perspective while also explaining the chemical logic behind biochemistry and why we have the pathways and cycles that we do. The author makes points you will find nowhere else.<br /><br />This tome is certainly encyclopedic in nature and provides info you won't find on wikipedia or any other book on enzymes, mechanisms, etc and just for that it is worth it if you like that kind of stuff. Consequently, there are some chapters that are more arduous and dry with endless lists of enzymes and there are some chapters that are bursting at the seams with wisdom that you will want to reread several times to catch everything.<br /><br />This book is for someone who has a strong foundation in chemistry in all of its disciplines in order to glean the most out of the book because the author really digs deep here in order to explain the underpinnings of biochemical phenomena. In contrast to most other biochemistry textbooks which drift away from the topic and go more and more into cell biology, immunology and the like, Metzler concentrates on the central topics of biochemistry, the enzymes and their mechanisms. There is no other book where one is more likely to find detailled infomation on the structure-function relation of just about any enzyme (with the only downside of having only black-and-white pictures, even for structures). This book is, however, to be treated with caution: it is not covering the topics of most biochem beginners courses (or is providing too much information that is about to overwhelm inexperienced readers, respectively). E. Metzler has saved me countless hours of reading through scientific publications. If your coursework or teaching similarily requires a more in depth understanding of biochemical principles than the standard 'wikipedia-level' textbooks like Stryer, Lehninger or Voet offer and you want to save yourself the time of reading through scientific articles and highly specialized literature, then this is porbably just the right choice for you. There really is nothing comparable out there!<br />These books were written, above all, for the study of organic biochemistry (bioorganic chemistry if you will), that is, classical biochemistry as seen from the eyes of a chemist (or biologist with sufficient chemical background.) The author specializes on the chemical principles of biomolecule reactivity and biological reaction mechanisms (enzymes) with several tablespoons of energetics and stereochemistry. While volume 1 explains mainly which different molecules are utilized by nature and how they work, volume 2 discusses these in context of biological pathways and adds the layer of pathway regulation as well as overall metabolism and genetics. On topics at the molecular level these books offer a much larger scope than any other biochemistry textbook I have come across. The author also discusses, to some extent, some of the higher functions usually dealt with in cell biology, immunology or genetics textbooks, providing some rarely found chemical insights here. That said, these books are pretty much the most comprehensive biochemistry books you will find, but they really only shine when taking the subcellular, organic-chemical viewpoint.<br /><br />These books are, imho, therefore NOT suitable for medical students/doctors, undergraduate biology and even undergraduate biochemistry students. These should also not be your first proper biochemistry books.<br />They are heavy in print, not very colourful and may seem a little dry to some readers. For the majority of people I suppose this will make these books more suitable as a reference than a textbook. It is NOT a book I would want to read from beginning to end. I have so far read only the (sub)chapters I needed (maybe 45% of the whole text) and jumped around a lot. While I'm familiar with many of the concepts and techniques in `Basic Perspective Drawing' my interest in the subject these days definitely leans more towards fine art. The book I learned the most from was Perspective In Art by Michael Woods back in the 80's; more recently I enjoyed Freehand Perspective and Sketching by Dora Miriam Norton (a Dover reprint of a work first published in 1908).<br /><br />Both titles addressed the reader as a fellow artist, someone interested in traditional representational drawing and painting. The geometry was kept to a minimum, with an emphasis on the visual rather than the calculated abstract. The illustrations appeared largely hand-drawn: landscapes, buildings, still life, and portraiture - the standard subject matter of a mainstream art education.<br /><br />`Basic Perspective Drawing' presents certain elements in a similar way, but overall has a very different point of view. It addresses the architectural and commercial draftsman and designer looking to create and illustrate elevations, interiors, and other modeled structures, populated by people, flora, and various mechanical objects.<br /><br />That's not to say a fine artist won't find much of value in here: the opening discussion on Cone of Vision was fascinating and something I've not seen covered in other art-oriented books. These days drawing and painting use a visual language that's far more flexible, less-representational, and influenced by technology than it was 100 years ago. Illustrative techniques such as paraline drawing covered here have effectively be applied to art drawing and painting.<br /><br />Overall there is more of an emphasis on the geometry in 'Basic Perspective Drawing': angles, directional and horizon lines, and surface projections, more than in more art-oriented books. But it's nothing to shy away from if math isn't a strong point.<br /><br />The appearance of some of the subject matter: the blocking in of human figures, shadow formulas and interior grid surfaces clearly point toward commercial art, but there are sections on freehand drawing with examples that look more like what you'd expect to see in art-oriented books.<br /><br />The layout clearly feels like a textbook - down to the suggested lesson plan in the appendix - and many of the illustrations have a precision that can be off-putting to those who find expression and emotion in the random play of line and shading. But again, the information is solid, the writing very clear and not excessively verbose or technical, and the book has a comfortable size (about 11 x 8 � landscape-oriented) that`s easy to browse and keep open on a desk.<br /><br />I guess it's only fitting to say about a book on perspective that it comes down to your point of view:<br /><br />If you want an in-depth discussion that doesn't avoid the numbers and you're comfortable with an orientation towards commercial art and architecture, you'll enjoy `Basic Perspective Drawing'. My wife is an interior designer and is skilled at architectural drafting (and at artistic drawing and sketching, for that matter). We're both fascinated by this book. For me, it helps me to understand what I'm looking at when I view art or architectural drawings. For her, it's a practical guide for enhancing drafting skills.<br /><br />It uses a great combination of text and images to get its points across. Too much text would be a slog, while simple illustrations wouldn't provide enough guidance, and this book strikes a perfect balance between the two.<br /><br />A lot of people buy this book because it's required for a class, but it has value for anyone interested in its topic. This book is image heavy, which in my mind is a big yay. I've seen some art reference / tutorial type of books that are 90% text and that just annoys me. If ever there is a subject where you want more images to help you out, it's art reference. In fact the only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because the book seems to have taken the visual approach to the other extreme, giving a few lines of explanations of what can be complicated layouts. I'm all for dumbing things down (yes please!) but in trying to shorten things down so much, some things actually end up sounding maybe even more complicated than they are and then while you're sitting there scratching your head over what in the heck they're saying, well, it's sort of like did you get that, let's move on to the next part. That, however, is where the visual aspect saves it. It does do the visual aspect very well. The Appendix especially, which has no text, is very useful showing a image breakdown (usually 4 or more "step by step" examples of a picture as it is being drawn).<br /><br />For people, like me, who find that perception is the greatest enemy when drawing, this is a useful tool. As Tim and Sam figure out how to get Sam back to the sea, Atkinson shows how friendships are formed, and how their trust in each other that helps them do extraordinary things.<br /><br />Atkinson tells a lovely story in very few words, using short, cheerful sentences to emphasize Tim's initial loneliness, and his utter joy in meeting Sam, a kindered spirit. Their mutual realization that they truly see each other is heartwarming, and a great reminder on how having a friend who truly understands you, can inspire great ideas and even greater adventures.<br /><br />Atkinson's storytelling is beautifully accentuated by his bold and detailed illustrations. The illustrations are charming and innovative, lending even more power to a tale that delivers an important message on the nature of true friendship and the perils of being invisible. This enchanting picture book utilizes a firm sense of whimsy to explore a real world problem When young Tim meets Sam, they quickly discover that they sure the common feeling that they are invisible, which is pretty funny since Sam is a big blue whale. Tim and Sam form an unlikely friendship, which causes them both to realize that they are no longer invisible. Tim's efforts to return Sam to the sea brings out the book's major theme: "friends don't let friends down." Friends are never invisible to each other.<br /><br />The innovative illustrations are captivating, with a unique color palette that evokes the deep blues and greens of the sea. The offsetting orange text, and orange depictions of the "real world" are startling and effective. Sam's bright orange coat is anything but invisible in the wide expanse of the blue-green sea. My only concern about this beautiful package is that some of the spreads are very dark,and it's sometimes difficult to discern Sam. It's a wonderful idea to make the big blue whale the most difficult to see, but I worry that in group sharing, kids won't be able to discern his giant sized charm.
