Exceeded all Expectations

I have been wanting to read this book for a while, and when it became available in a kindle format, I jumped on it. Having said that, I didn't have high expectations for this book. I just didn't think a professional kayaker would be a good writer, and I am extremely picking about books in general. I have to say, this book exceeded all of my expectations. I knew the author would have lots of fascinating content (And he does! There are even cannibals!) but he also turns out to be an amazing writer! What a beautiful portrait of Africa and what thoughtful reflections! I tried to read this book a slowly as I possibly could to make it last. Each time I picked it up, it was like a special treat. The epilogue gave me chills. I found myself highlighting so many passages to come back to. I highly recommend this book.

Who was this man? I mean, if you can read this book and not think he was an amazing person, I'd be surprised. Any person who can say "The best day ever"...and the end of a really difficult and perilous day...just wow. I didn't expect this book to be quite so long, and it took me a few days to read, but I was definitely fully "there" as Hendri told his story. The one thing that stood out for me was his continual reference to the hardship of those living in less fortunate circumstances (in the areas that he traveled in), but they carried on because it is all they know. This book gave me a renewed great appreciation for many things. I will definitely read it again. I have only one wish after reading this book - is that I could have met Hendri Coetzee. He was more than an "explorer". He had soul and charisma that transcends what even I thought was possible in terms of human endurance and persistence. There would never be a better day.....

About the Author
Andrea Pejrolo is a music technology professor at Berklee College of Music, MIDI programmer, sound designer, composer/ arranger, and jazz acoustic and electric bassist. He is also the author of Acoustic and MIDI Orchestration for the Contemporary Composer (Focal Press, 2007) and has written several articles for music magazines in the US and abroad. Andrea created the iAcousticA Studio drum library available in Kontakt, EXS-24, iDrum, Giga Studio, and Reason NN-XT formats. He has collaborated on many varied projects with US and UK production companies, theaters, music festivals, websites, and international organizations

The Kindle Edition is missing the audio examples

This is a good book, easy to digest yet surprisingly thorough.

However, be warned. The otherwise awesome kindle edition is lacking the critical audio examples that you get when buying the printed version.

Why? I don't know. The kindle can handle audio files. Or the publisher could make the examples available on their web site.

But neither option is available. Which ruins an otherwise great read, since you'll be zooming along learning about this or that intonation -- and then the author will say "check out this sample track on the CD" -- but, woops, no audio samples are available on the kindle. I'll bet all the examples would take less than 2 or 3 MB of space as MP3 files, which would be fine. I hope Amazon or the publisher corrects this error.

Luckily, I was able to get ahold of the author himself and he helped me connect with the samples. But that's just crazy! Cool of him. Bad on Amazon!

Why was my previous review deleted?

I wrote a detailed review a couple of weeks ago that gave this book a three star rating. It was not vulgar or inappropriate in any way, yet it was completely deleted. However, I just received an email from Amazon soliciting my opinion once again!

In short, the book has some decent information on sequencing techniques, though some of it just demonstrates a firm grasp of the obvious, i.e., "use controller messages to add expression" and other similar gems.

The orchestration part of the book covers the rhythm section (don't over quantize) as well as the various sections of the orchestra and how to sequence those instruments realistically. The book does not cover how to combine instruments from the various sections. Stings + woodwinds anyone? You will have to look elsewhere for that type of information.

Recommended for beginners.

Decent book but not enough depth.

I ordered this book in great anticipation to find lots of technical details as to MIDI composition. However, the book appears to be mainly intended for students who are at their beginning trials (or little beyond) of computer composition. Though good at that level, and containing lots of very useful information and tips, the book does not go into the techniques, and their illustration, far enough. Many of the suggestions remain just that, without showing specific work. Ditto with techniques. "Use CCx for situation y" but, although sometimes graphically shown, many times the narative is not developed into thorough presentation. In other words, I would have desired (much) more analysis and examples.

Then, there's too much introduction to traditional instruments, occupying quite a hefty chunk of the book. When creating a book of this nature, one would expect that the reader be beyond elementary stages. After all, orchestration is a capstone discipline. Evidently, one must know the ins and outs of traditional orchestration in order to procede to the next level. The authors mention this, so I won't dwell on it. In my experience, the composer who uses a computer to realise his/her musical ideas, struggles mostly with less than perfect samples, which behave differently when in combination with other samples than when are sounded only by themselves. For example, no matter how good a violin section sample may be, when put together with viola section samples it will behave differently. I know, books that fully render MIDI composition experience can be of interminable dimentions. However, more extensive books are very much needed, and I am sure that readers would copiously benefit from the present book's authors' vast experience. I also realise that such books will be more expensive than this one. Oh well, the cost of acquiring skills has never been an inexpensive endeavor.

UPDATE: I have to confess that reviewing the book only a few months after its purchase was a bit premature. I dare say this because the book is packed with much more information than meets the eye when working with it only for a relatively brief time. I am not the impudent, too sure of himself, wannabe to give advice to people as to how to proceed in their work flow. This is very personal. However, if anyone is serious about computer aided composition, then you'll have to sit down at the computer with the book and try out every solution that's given, and then try it again, and then come back to it and try to improve on it, especially when it comes to strings and woodwinds. I now have accumulated enough experience to relate to the incredible problems facing the composer when orchestrating with samples in a sequencer. For example, to date I haven't heard good violin samples as far as their higher registers. They all suffer from discontinuous, grainy sound, with residual background noise which damages bow noise, and aliasing harmonics, top manufacturers notwithstanding. I'd illustrate their sound by the action of dragging a steel shovel over gravel. This sound is exacerbated in the mix with other strings, even if one finally manages to somehow EQ out a few aliasing harmonics. The book treats many of the problems that crop up in the mix and presentation of CCs, tricks to obtaining better legato and expressivity are invaluable. Equally invaluable are the examples on the CD. Needless to say, this is a seminal book, among the very few that treat composition with orchestral samples. Most of the literature out there is focused on the rock band. This book definitely fills in a very deep hiatus in the literature.

HAVING THIS BOOK IS A MUST!!

A second edition soon? Wouldn't be soon enough.

ATATURK by ANDREW MANGO

An excellent review of not just Ataturk's biography but the last days of the Ottomans and the nascent years of the Turkish Republic. The work cuts through the legends that have developed around this historical person as he became deified by the nation he created and presents him as a man, with his strenghts and weaknesses. Mango's perspective is clearly Turkophile. Those interested in the history of other ethnic groups like Kurds and especially Armenians will find the book disappointing. References to the events of 1915 are very scant and presented entirely from the Turkish Nationalist perspective. There has not been a good book written by a Westerner about Ataturk since Lord Kinross's classic. Mango's effort, with a more contemporary perspective, and much more detail about day-to-day events is likely to eventually rate in the same category. I would highly recommend this book to anyone deeply interested in the subject.

Somewhat hobbled by uninspired writing, Smith's solid plot finds England's Detective Chief Inspector Neil Paget facing a policeman's nightmare: the woman he cares for becomes a prime murder suspect and clearly has something to hide. Paget's travails begin Christmas Day, when he's called to investigate the apparent suicide of a troubled schoolgirl, Monica Shaw. Although Paget questions the suicide theory, the coroner closes the case. At New Year's, an obvious homicide brings Paget to stables near Monica's school. Victor Prescott has been killed by a pitchfork driven into his chest. Paget recalls that he recently saw Prescott arguing with Dr. Andrea McMillan, whom the widowed detective has been dating. Prescott, it turns out, was really Victor Palmer, lately released from a prison term for child molesting. In Palmer's room, police find a picture of Dr. McMillan, who has never mentioned a daughter, and a child. As he struggles to connect the deaths, Paget can't escape the possibility that Dr. McMillan is involved. For reasons of their own, many well-drawn characters?the stable owner, his wandering wife, a frightened employee and Monica's edgy house mother?play games of deception with police. Paget doggedly sorts through their stories, finally tumbling to a host of clues skillfully planted by Smith (Dragon's Breath, 1980) along the way.

Strange things are happening in the quiet country lanes of Shropshire, bailiwick of Detective Chief Inspector Neil Paget. The Thornton Hill School for Girls and Glenacres, a horse farm owned by Jack Lucas, are next-door neighbors. Paget is called to the school when 17-year-old Monica Shaw, a diabetic and the daughter of government economist Julia Shaw, is found dead in her bed the day after Christmas. Shy, awkward Monica, the only student in residence over the holidays, had been invited to a party at Glenacres the previous day by Sally Pritchard, one of the grooms, and had come back to the school drunk and distraught, according to sympathetic schoolmistress Jane Wolsey. Paget is thinking suicide (an overdose of insulin), but the autopsy finds death due to an aneurysm and the case is closed. In the meantime, a violent death has occurred at Glenacres, where Victor Prescott, a newcomer to the staff, has been killed--gruesomely--in one of the barns. As it turns out, Prescott was not his real name, and he appears to have had some dark connection to Dr. Andrea Macmillan, with whom Paget, a widower, had been enjoying a slowly flowering friendship. It takes another death, many misplaced suspicions, and some rigorous questioning before the haunting truth is bared. This first in a series from Canadian author Smith (Dragon's Breath, 1980) is suspenseful from the start, uncovering its tangled web of relationships--conventional and otherwise--at a leisurely pace: a sturdy '90s version of the British procedural, with Inspector Paget a model of the gentleman copper. Not bad . . .

I am a huge fan of British police procedurals and I was delighted to see a new team had been born. On the whole, Frank Smith's Fatal Flaw does not disappoint, but his second book in this series, Stone Dead is a much better read. Fatal Flaw's story is good and it runs smoothly and quickly. His two coppers, DCI Paget and DS Tregalles are likeable fellows, but I find that the Sergeant has a lot more personality than the somewhat stiff and blah Chief Inspector (Smith spends a little too much time torturing us with Paget's terrible luck in love). But, in the first book and the third (Candles for the Dead), Tregalles almost seems a minor character. All in all, the series is good and I can't wait for the fourth installment.

Follow the Clues

This takes place in Great Britain. It's a police procedural where you follow the detective as he follows the clues. There are 3 crimes. The first is the murder/suicide of a young teen. The second and third are murders of two men on a ranch. One has had a pitchfork pushed into his chest. The other was burned in a fire purposely set. The police end up with two main suspects, one of which is a doctor currently seeing the police detective. Good story.

Solid Brit police procedural

I'm fond of British police procedurals, and Frank Smith's *Fatal Flaw* is a solid contribution to the genre. It held my attention from the first page to the last.

Smith lays out some good plot lines and brings us quite a few solid characters. A woman with a secret past starts dating a cop, and that secret becomes central to a murder the detective is investigating. A troubled teenager with a cold ambitious mother is found dead at her boarding school during the holidays - was she driven to suicide, or murdered, or did she die some other way?

I would recommend this book to anybody else who enjoys this genre.

A Must Read! Excellent Book!

I have read this book once already and just started reading it again for the second time. I love this book! It's a fast read and really makes you think about how you want to raise your children and how you want to be remembered by your family and your peers once your time on this earth is over.
I found this book taught me how to react better and try my best to see my glass half full to any situation God throws my way.
He has a great gift of making you feel like you were with him through this whole journey!
Hopefully Bryan will write another book in the future.
