About the Author
Pat Cunningham is a professor of education at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Pat has taught first grade, fourth grade, and remedial reading and has over 30 years of teaching experience. She is involved in staff development with teachers and administrators across the United States. Pat was inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame in 2002.

Dottie Hall is a former curriculum coordinator who has taught first, second, third, and fourth grades, and at the college level. Dottie is the director of the Four-Blocks� Center at Wake Forest University. She has over 30 years of teaching experience and is involved in staff development with teachers and administrators across the United States.

SO useful

If you are wondering whether or not to buy this book... buy it!! It has been SO useful to me. It is so easy to give it to a parent volunteer to do with a small group of kids for a (WORTHWHILE!) center. I always wanted to do more Making Words activities with my students, but it was always such a pain to get out the right letters for 24 students and then put them away when done. This makes it super easy because the letters are already on the page, the students just cut them out themselves. And it really is a complete making words activity because after you make the words, you sort them, and then transfer them to help you spell a word in a sentence. The words are just perfect for my average 1st grader, and I got the 2nd grade book for my advanced students. (Great way to differentiate). The students love seeing if they can figure out the secret word. As you can see, I can't say enough good things about this book.

Great for home!

My girls love this. It was "game time" when we played in the summer. It's fun because you get to cut out letters, play with them, and discover new words. It is a very quick, simple way to review phonics, vocabulary, spelling- all without them really knowing they are doing all that! We would save the letters and when daddy got home we would challenge him to figure out the "mystery word". It's also a great introduction to Scrabble. One daughter used the 3rd grade while the other used the 1st grade. We did it at the same time just taking turns with each new discovered word. I used this program when I taught school and I highly recommend it for school or home.

Summer Homework Is Fun for a Future First Grader

This is a wonderful book for my ESL tutee. Although he will be begin first grade this late summer, his mother told me he is reading at the third grade level. This book will assist with the "homework" I assign each summer to keep up on his studies.

Being a "special needs" child due to a birth delivery injury, the child has limited motion in his right hand and shoulder and writes with his left hand. He will be practicing his printing while still undergoing home exercises directed by his physical therapist and conducted by his mother to strengthen his right hand and arm. Full mobility is not expected.

This book will assist the gregarious and eager student to excel and exceed expectations in school. His kindergarten teacher recognized that he already knew how to read and focused on her favorite books which were Pete the Cat books. I had ordered many Pete the Cat books for the tutee in anticipation of kindergarten. The tutee loved the books ordered through Amazon and almost literally "ate" the books up.

The tutee, I believe, is in love with reading and learning. I have told the tutee that I expect him to study and his parents support that by encouraging library trips and school participation. This book will certainly make summer homework fun.

There Must Be a Better Alternative

Very wordy and slow to get to the point. Author could state her purposes and meet her goals in a good fourth of the space and number of words she consumes. Although fairly well conceived, it is dry, without character, and poorly executed. Educators: if wanting to instruct in culturally responsive teaching, look for a more engaging, concise, and lively text than what this author offers. Although the topic is appealing, compelling, and relevant, reading this text is fairly torturous.

Gay demonstrates that culturally responsive teaching is both a moral imperative and essential to effective teaching strategy

I purchased this book on a whim, read it cover-to-cover, and am very pleased to have it available as a resource in my personal library.

Within, Gay makes a clear case for why educators must adopt culturally responsive teaching practices, both to perform their role effectively and as a moral imperative. The content is philosophically rigorous, well-researched, and evidence-based in it's claims and prescriptions. Despite that the book is targeted at grade school classroom educators, I believe that anyone working in education, from policy makers to corporate trainers, can benefit from this book.

In particular, I found Gay's debunking of well-intentioned but still problematic representations of ethnic and cultural diversity very helpful. For example:

In the sub-chapter "Progress but Some Problems Remain" p.131
". . . the content included about ethnic issues is rather bland, conservative, conformist and "safe". it tends to emphasize harmonious relations among racial groups and is too often a 'weapon of deculturalization' for the heritages and experiences of groups of color . . . unpleasant sides of society and cultural diversity are either sanitized or bypassed entirely"

And "Biases Persist in Child and Adolescent Literature" p.143
"There has also been a tendency to over-correct for stereotypes by not assigning any differentiating characteristics to the speech and actions of . . . [individuals of color] . . . or to make the characters superhumanly good and supremely capable . . ."

On reflection, the mistakes here are obvious. As Gay points out, such representations prefer experiences that are closely aligned with mainstream European American values, beliefs and standards of behavior. Furthermore, avoiding more authentic and contextualized representations of diverse peoples may imply to diverse students that their experiences do not matter. Finally, student engagement and achievement is unlikely to improve through the use of bland, fictitious and decontextualized characters.

The above, like many of the carefully considered points Gay makes with regards to teaching racially and ethnically diverse students, can be applied to considerations of any student grouping (neurodiverse and differently-abled students come to mind).

Masterpiece from a nationally and internationally renoun scholar/educator in multicultural education

Geneva Gay is a top-ranked scholar and educator who has years of research and experience behind the words of the book, Culturally Responsive Teaching. The second edition, in particular, is directly useful to my work as an educator. It is grounded in practice, and--as the subtitle promises--it connects this directly to social data, educational theory, diverse cultural frames of American students, and the practical life of a classroom teacher. While no book is flawless, this book--as well as the author's approach--has been praised widely by specialists in education theory and research and teaching methods. Other reviewers who content the book is uninteresting and written in an unprofessional style may be honest about their lack of connection to the text, but the claim of weak writing is unfounded, in terms of conventions of academic writing.

About the Author
Dr. Sandra Cabot MBBS, is the medical and executive director of the Australian National Health Advisory Service. She graduated with honors in medicine and surgery from the University of Adelaide in South Australia in 1975. She began her medical career in 1980 as a GP obstetrician-gynecologist and practiced in Sydney Australia. During the mid 1980s she spent time working as a volunteer doctor at the Leyman Hospital, which was the largest missionary hospital in Northern India. Dr. Cabot is an experienced commercial pilot and flies herself to seminars throughout Australia, often visiting remote areas. Scant but excellent information for post surgery patients.

I find her books valuable and her products are quite good. My only wish was that she had a larger chapter (or even a whole book) specifically for people who have had their gall bladder removed. That was the whole reason I bought the book, since it is in the title. I had my gall bladder removed with complications that resulted in also losing half of my liver. There is virtually no information for someone in my situation. So, I try to find information on both liver and gall bladder issues. Sandra Cabot has given me very helpful information with her other books, especially the fatty liver book. I just wanted MORE information for what to do post surgery.That said, what WAS there was extremely helpful! At last, I understood the symptoms I was having, such as chronic reflux acid. I followed her suggestion to try digestive enzymes with ox bile. It works wonderfully for me. So... yes.. the book was worth it for just 4 good pages that applied to me.

Get this book!

This book is really a more central discussion of diet and lifestyle than most others and it's simple easy and short. You might as well eat for your liver and gallbladder because if you do that you'll certainly be doing the right thing for your digestive system, leaky gut, et al. I can't rate this book highly enough. Actually I located this author the day I was told to have my gallbladder removed at an ER and I emailed her in Australia. She emailed me back the next day, surprisingly, and also directed me to her affiliate in the US who I was able to call and who gave me feedback and direction without charge. Dr. Cabot also sells a line of supplements and based on the simple clarity and honesty demonstrated in her book I am
a believer. I did have gallbladder surgery but the book is now my bible on how to save my liver - something the medical establishment won't even mention.

SMALL BOOK... LOTS of GOOD Natural Gallbladder Treatments

Very informative SMALL BOOK.

This book offers 'The Natural Treatment of Gallstones' in Chapter Two, which consists of a list of the 'Best Foods for the Gallbladder' and includes a Raw Vegetable Juice Recipe for the Gallbladder.

I have learned so much about how to take care of my gallbladder, as I do have gallstones. This book focuses on preventing stones in the gallbladder in the first place, and what to do 'naturally' if you have been diagnosed with gallbladder stones.

This book should be read by everyone, especially those who have a healthy gallbladder. I can tell you, if I had read this book five years ago, I believe that I could have prevented developing stones in the first place.

Read the whole book as it will give you a good understanding of 'WHY' stones are developed and 'HOW' the liver, gallbladder and digestive system works.

Wow! I keep nodding my head as I read this book. This author is really good. His writing is fluid, entertaining, and concise. Believe me, I can be such a cut throat critic (read my reviews). What I like most about this book is that it actually lived up to its big title. I am not the same person 15 minutes ago. For the first time, I LEARNED A LOT from a tiny, short book. Amazing.

Worth the read

If looking for ideas on to make your life better this is a good quick read. The author gets to his points quickly without all the other nonsense of other books. I disagree with the previous review that you have to think the authors way or else. He simply presented his belief and what worked for him. What you take away from that is up to you. It just presents a different way of thinking that can have a positive effect on your life. Does it really work? We'll see...but you'll never know unless you try it for yourself. Nothing is absolute..but his ideas do have merit.

This book cuts through the clutter, simplifies, guides, and focuses in a way that is to be appreciated in our over stuffed lives
of multi-tasking, and deadlines. The author reminds us to not only focus on our particular path, but to ask if it really is our path, not that of those who have their own programs for us.

He illuminates that the core of "The Secret" of the Law of Attraction is action: daily, focused, productive with time for it provided without interference.
